What's included in the price?

A professional concrete patio installation involves several steps, each with its own labour and material cost. Understanding the process helps you evaluate quotes accurately.

1. Excavation

Removing existing grass, soil and debris to the required depth (usually 6–8 inches for a 4-inch slab with gravel base).

2. Sub-base

4 inches of compacted gravel provides drainage and prevents heaving in freeze-thaw climates. This is the step most DIYers skip — and regret.

3. Formwork

Wooden or metal forms define the slab edges and hold the concrete in shape. Complex shapes with curves cost more.

4. Reinforcement

Wire mesh or rebar helps prevent cracking. Wire mesh is standard for patios; rebar is used for thicker slabs or vehicle areas.

5. Pour & finish

Ready-mix concrete is delivered by truck, poured, screeded level and finished to the specified texture. Timing is critical.

6. Sealing

A penetrating or film-forming sealer protects against staining, moisture and freeze damage. Reapply every 2–3 years.

What drives the cost up?

  • Size. Larger patios have lower per-sqft costs due to mobilisation efficiency, but the total price rises. A 600 sqft patio costs roughly 2.3× a 200 sqft patio, not 3×.
  • Thickness. Moving from a 4-inch to a 6-inch slab adds approximately 25–30% to material costs and increases excavation depth. Required if you're parking vehicles.
  • Slope and drainage. If the site is not level, grading work adds $500–$2,000. Proper slope (1/8 inch per foot away from the house) is non-negotiable for water management.
  • Site access. If a concrete truck cannot get within 50 feet of the pour site, the contractor may need a pump truck — adding $500–$1,500. Tight access through a gate or side yard is a common issue.
  • Decorative finish. Stamped concrete requires additional labour, release agent, stamps and a coloured sealer — typically doubling the cost of a plain slab. Multiple patterns or custom designs add further.

Frequently asked questions

How thick should a concrete patio be?
4 inches is the standard residential thickness and is sufficient for foot traffic, furniture and grills. If you plan to drive vehicles, a riding mower or golf cart onto the patio, increase to 6 inches and add rebar reinforcement. Thicker concrete costs more but lasts significantly longer under heavy loads.
How long does concrete take to cure?
Concrete is ready to walk on carefully after 24–48 hours. Furniture can go on after 3–5 days. Full design strength (3,000–4,000 PSI) is reached at 28 days. Do not apply a sealer before the 28-day mark. In cold weather (below 50°F), curing takes longer and the fresh concrete must be protected from freezing.
Does a concrete patio need a permit?
A freestanding concrete patio usually doesn't require a permit. Check with your local building department if it's attached to the house structure, if it involves drainage alterations, or if your HOA has restrictions. In the UK, patios up to 5 sqm adjacent to a house generally don't need planning permission, but larger areas may.
How long does a concrete patio last?
A well-installed and properly maintained concrete patio lasts 25–50 years. The main enemies are freeze-thaw cycles (which crack an unsealed surface), tree roots, and settling from poor sub-base preparation. Sealing every 2–3 years is the single most effective maintenance step.
Can I pour concrete myself?
Small slabs under 50 sqft using bagged ready-mix are a manageable DIY project with rental tools. For anything larger, ready-mix concrete is delivered by truck and must be poured and finished quickly — typically in under 60 minutes — before it begins to set. This requires experience and additional hands. Stamped or coloured finishes are very time-sensitive and are almost always better left to professionals.
